Tuckpointing or masonry pointing & re-pointing service:

    • Tuckpointing: is a way of using two contrasting colors of mortar in brickwork, one color matching the bricks themselves, to give an artificial impression that very fine joints have been made.
    • Pointing: to correct defects or finish off joints in newly laid masonry.
    • Re-pointing: to place wet mortar into cut or raked joints to repair weathered joints in old masonry.

Tuckpointing is a precise, time consuming and labor intensive process that involves removing and replacing crumbling & missing mortar between stones, blocks and bricks. This prevents further deterioration due to moisture penetrating the failing joints and compromising the whole structure.

Tuckpointing may seem a straightforward task but it is one that demands a high level of skill on the part of the professional tuckpointers involved. The costs of works associated with tuckpointing and re-pointing are relatively insignificant in relation to the benefits that can be achieved. In particular, the increase in value of the property and the subsequent resale factors, but also the enhanced image of the property and the reduction in risk of potential costly structural defects. If not maintained, aging and damaged mortar joints can become a weatherproofing problem and even a structural problem in severe cases.

In general, mortar joints that are exposed to the weather typically need to be tuckpointed every 25 years or so. It’s not something you do often, yet it’s essential and a big enough job to put in the hands of experts. Only a professional tuckpointer can repair weakened structures and restore your brick or stonework to its original beauty.
